The Nationals

Hi guys,

The National Student Roleplaying and Wargaming Championships (the nationals, for short) are on the 21-23 of April, at the University of Nottingham’s University Park Campus this year. It might seem a long time away, but time flies and things need to be organised in advance.

The nationals are a really fun annual gathering of university societies. It’s technically a competition, but the main focus is to meet up with new people and have fun roleplaying, possibly in systems you haven’t played before.

Here’s the info pack. If you want to book rooms on campus I suggest you do so early. As with the Christmas meal, someone will be going around taking names and your three category choices in the next few weeks. The nationals cost £25, and it is first come first serve on your game choices.

A reminder we are looking into getting a coach this year.

The deadline for paying and choosing games is the 7th of December, but if you can pay earlier that would be great.

It’s a really fun experience which many of our members have gone to every year, so I hope many of you sign up.

If you won’t be at Wednesday sessions and want to go, message Rebecca on Facebook or send an email to noddsoc@shef.ac.uk.

GMs Needed

As you know, the new year is quick approaching and we need games to play!

So, if you are planning on RUNNING A GAME then we need your information.
We need GM Name, Game Title, System, No. of Players (Inc spaces already provisionally filled) and a brief description of the game!
This can be sent to any of the Committee (mainly Rob (President) or Rebecca (Social Sec) ) or the Society e-mail address; noddsoc [at] sheffield.ac.uk

Please bear in mind that our first session is the 28th, and we would like to have the full list prepared at least a few days before then.

Thank you and happy gaming!

September Events

Friends, Romans, Strange Troll Creatures of NoDDSoc.
We have announcements for you.
First of all, hope you’ve all had a great summer so far and are looking forward to another year at your favourite Roleplaying Society.
So, we have arranged the following events at the start of term, with the view to introducing new players to NoDDSoc. It would be wonderful if we could get some of you guys to come along and GM for us to help bring new members into the fold, or if you are new, to come along and meet us!

Tues 13th Sept 2016 – 4pm-6pm – Orientation Week Taster Session – Activities Zone/Coffee Revs
Tues 20th Sept 2016 – 7pm – 9pm – Intro Week Taster Session – Activities Zone/Coffee Revs
Sun 25th Sept – 1pm – 5pm – Final Taster Session – The Gallery (N.B. This is after the Activities Fair)

Then, we have the Activities Fair, where you can come along and sign up to join us for this year and receive your membership card and free dice!

Thurs 22nd Sept 2016 – 11am-4pm – Activities Fair

And lastly, having triumphed over the inscrutable machine that is the SU’s room booking system, we have our regular sessions on Wednesdays and Sundays on the gallery.
As per usual, we encourage those who are planning to run a game to prepare a one-shot to advertise your campaign for the first Wednesday session, and maybe again on the following Sunday, and then start your campaign proper on the second.

Wednesday 28th September 2016 – 6pm-10pm – 1st NoDDSoc Wednesday Meeting (One-Shots)
Sunday 2nd August 2016 – 1pm – 5pm – 1st NoDDSoc Sunday Session
Wednesday 5th August 2016 – 6pm-10pm – 2nd NoDDSoc Wednesday Meeting (Campaigns Begin)

As always, we encourage members to come and join us in Interval after our regular sessions for Drinks and Socialising, where you can swap stories about your games!

Looking forward to seeing you all in September,
The NoDDSoc Committee

NoDDSoc AGM

Hey guys,

Today (the 13th) is the first day back.

Next week (20th) is the AGM starting at 6:30. If you wish to run you just have to turn up. If you want to run but can’t make 6:30 let me know and I’ll delay the position you want to run for till later if I can.

Ask any of the current members about what the job entails if you want to run.

Also if you want to change our constitution, e-mail us or let me know.

See you tomorrow.

New Semester Games

Hey guys,

I hope people had a good break and exams are going well.

The official first session back is the 10th February. Some DM’s may start earlier, however be aware the gallery won’t booked and is be being used for quiet revision so those who wish to will need to find elsewhere to run.

Can I have everyone who’s starting a new game and looking for players wither message me or post here.

Similarly those with continuing games who have space for new players, can you let me know?

People looking for a game come the start of term either let me know and I’ll give a list of options/get you into one, or keep an eye on this page and get in contact with GM’s.

The Nationals

The student national roleplaying and wargaming championships are coming up on the 1st-3rd April 2016.

Have a look here for more info (or here for the one with less graphics).

We are looking into getting a coach to take people to the Nationals, either very cheap or free for you guys. If you want to go you will have to arrange your own accomodation.

If you’re interested, have a look at the info pack and pick categories of games that you’re interested in. Charlotte will be going round to get preferences in the next few weeks.

NoDDSoc Live Action Roleplay

Greetings NoDDSoccers (NoDDSocians? NoDDSocites?)
The Committee have been in discussions recently over the potential of NoDDSoc holding a LARP (Live-Action Roleplay), possibly in association with some other societies (Namely Assassins or Medieval) and, whilst we are still in the early stages of assessing viability, we’d like to know the rest of NoDDSoc’s opinions on this idea.

What we’re wanting to know is:-
Would you be interested in this/happy for us to invest in it?
What would you want to get out of it?
Would you want a more social game, or more combat?
What sort setting/genre would you prefer? Fantasy, Sci-Fi? Horror? etc.
How frequently would you like us to host a game?
Would you prefer an ongoing campaign type arrangement, or different genres as one-off sessions?
How much would you be willing to pay to play? (This is largely because we will have to have insurance, equipment, props etc which may not all be covered in the funding we could get. But all “profit” would go back into the society)
And lastly, we would also be looking for people that would be willing to help out in the running/planning of the venture, whether that’s acquiring equipment, monstering, writing plot, refereeing and so forth.

Please contact us with your thoughts, either in a comment on this post, a message to one of the committee, via our NoDDSoc email, or via this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GJ928ZH

Yours,
The Committee

The Library

We have an extensive library of roleplaying related books and magazines for members to borrow. So if you want to run or play a game and you don’t have the rulebooks, don’t worry, as we might have a copy! Have a look at this spreadsheet to check availability.

Finally, a word from our librarian:

If you want to take a book out of the library, message me and I’ll bring it to the next meeting of NoDDSoc.
If you want to donate books, magazines, or any sort of rpg resource, please do so. A note will be made in the book and in our inventory, so that future generations can marvel at your generosity in supporting the great and noble endeavour that is NoDDSoc.
We are hoping to expand our collection (through purchases) this year, so if you have any requests or suggestions, please let me know. I’ll have some updates on this soon.

This Year’s Games

You can find the list of games being run this year on Wednesdays and Sundays here:

2016-2017 Games List

Please remember, that games begin with our traditional one-shot session on Wednesday 28th of September, and Campaigns proper begin on Wednesday 5th of October, so you can try out a game on the 28th, and if you decide it’s not for you, move to a different one on the 5th.

(P.S. If you have a game you are wanting to run and haven’t told us yet, please email the NoDDSoc account (noddsoc [at] sheffield.ac.uk) ASAP to have it added to the list).
